Playing by the rules ebook copyHey everyone, I’m Emily Robertson. My debut novel, Playing by the Rules, recently came out. This book was a labor of love for me for so many reasons. First let me show you the blurb for the book.

Payton always had one rule she lived by, no boyfriends until after college. No one seemed to agree with her, even her own mother who had her at age sixteen. Returning to school after an accident that flipped Payton’s world upside down left her feeling out of control. Holding on to her rule seemed to be her only lifeline.

Josh had been letting the past rule his life for too long. Finally being at school, he’d become his own man, and he’d been putting all that behind him. Just when he thought he had it all put together, life got crazy. Not only did his ex show back up, but Josh also found he couldn’t get Payton Whitmore out of his head.

Once Josh convinces Payton to give him a shot, she’s so closed off that he wonders if it’s even worth it. Josh can tell there’s something special about Payton though, and as soon as he goes all in, he’s ready to show her that some rules are made to be broken.

* * * *

I got the idea for this book from a dream. I saw a scene play out in my dream, and I knew I wanted to tell their story. So I sat down the next day and did just that. In the book Payton is struggling with the effects of a recent TBI, and it’s turned her life upside down. I remember when I started getting treatment for my TBI and how out of balance that made me feel. I felt like I was always walking a step behind and no matter what I did, I just couldn’t catch up. Treatments have been long, hard fought battles and there are still days that I feel like I’m no better off than I was at the start. I wanted to share some of my journey through Payton. Through the story, Payton’s journey took on its own life, and it became her story.

One other interesting fact I like to share about the book is that Southwestern College, where Payton and Josh go to school, is a real school. It’s actually my alma mater. I had fun writing a place that was familiar, and it gave me the ability to lose myself in the story without having to worry about the setting. My days on campus were some of the best of my life. I made some great friends, faced some of the hardest trials, and through it all, I became the person I am today. While I was writing the first draft of this book back in 2012, I visited campus for my ten year reunion. It was outside the cafeteria that weekend that I typed, “The End,” and started on the second book in the Portwood series.

I love writing New Adult because of the experiences that the characters are facing and what they feel. I remember when I went off to college and the things that I faced. I remember the things that I thought were a big deal then and really they were nothing. I remember facing things that I hope no one else has to, and what trials that brought.

Even though I would never want to relive that time in my life, there’s something about that period in our lives. There’s something about the experiences we face during those years, and how we all handle them. That’s what draws me to writing about characters that are just starting out in their adult lives.
